With the hint of summer and the early sun rises, the streets of Jo’burg were filled with cyclists. They all had the same goal - the 94.7 Cycle Challenge. It’s been a tradition in MAC to enter a team, and this year the company did not disappoint, with eight representatives. Braving the big event for the first time was Saar Ben-Attar, who would be joined by Mark Cotterrell, Mervyn and Adele Akron, Grant Hansel, Boris Sucevic, as well as Rika and Richard Kolbe.

Whilst some were aiming for personal bests, others were out to simply finish. Yet we were all united by one common goal: to enjoy the day when cycling took over the city. Weather forecasts had predicted rain, and in typical weather forecast fashion, they had got it completely wrong. By 7am the sun was beating down and, by midday, temperatures were well above 30°C. This year the support team was headed up by Karen Albers, with support from Grant Bruce.

They stationed themselves near the halfway point on the route to hand out much needed refreshments and encouragement for the team. Karen then also joined us for some celebratory drinks at the finish line, to share the stories and laughs of the day.
This year we had a 100% finish rate, so a huge congratulations to the team for their great effort. A special mention has to go to Saar who cycled for over five and a half hours through the midday heat, yet still finished looking fresh and chirpy. Many thanks to Mark and Karen for making the event happen, and all those that took up the challenge. We challenge all MAC employees to join us next year for Jo’burg’s toughest race! |
