A Psych student's perspective on Leadership Development at MAC
by Claire Johnston

High performing leadership that is situation-specific is crucial to the success of any business.  It is common to find that successful organisations are driven by executive teams that not only function well as teams, but also display effective and cohesive leadership. My study as a master’s student in Industrial Psychology has taught me the complexity that is associated with team development as well as leadership and the challenges involved in bringing these two aspects together in creating viable leadership teams.

As an intern at MAC, I have had the opportunity of observing some workshops facilitated by MAC consultants in Leadership Development.  I realize that the success of transforming a leadership team is not only about having a strong theoretical base, but also involves working with individual members in each unique context.  A strong theoretical base is vitally important.  Without it, leaders cannot be assessed, solutions designed and implemented or insightful observations made.  However, on its own, theory is not sufficient to meet the distinctive challenges faced by a team.

The most sustainable solution for the client is found when experience and theory intersect as the foundation for understanding each team’s leadership challenges and opportunities.
